Valentine’s Day in Thailand

A Celebration of Love, Thai-Style

Known for their joie de vivre and love of celebration, Thais have enthusiastically embraced Valentine’s Day, known locally as “Wan Waa-Len-Taai.” Like other festivities in the Kingdom, this celebration of love takes on a unique dimension, caught between commercial fervor and deeply rooted cultural traditions.

As February 14th approaches, a tidal wave of red and pink washes over the urban landscape. Shopping malls overflow with giant teddy bears (often “Made in China” and potentially allergenic) brandishing hearts emblazoned with “I love you,” while florists’ stalls overflow with red roses. Stationery shops, meanwhile, bank on cards illustrated with Cupid and hearts.

While Valentine’s Day is an opportunity for young lovers to declare their affection, it is also popular with couples wishing to tie the knot. Registry offices are thus taken by storm from dawn by eager couples hoping to wed on this symbolic day. For the more adventurous, and especially for tourists in search of something exotic, some diving schools even offer underwater weddings. An original experience, but one that, according to reports, proves somewhat impractical with a wedding dress and oxygen tanks.

Such is the passion for Valentine’s Day that some registrars categorically refuse to register divorce applications on this day.

However, behind this festive facade lies a more complex reality. Thai society, despite appearances, remains deeply conservative.

Forget public displays of affection! Holding hands in the street is already frowned upon for heterosexual couples, while it remains tolerated between friends of the same sex. As for lingering kisses and other bolder displays of affection, these are to be avoided at the risk of being called to order by the police, guardians of “good morals”.

Valentine’s Day in Thailand thus offers a contrasting picture: an imported celebration, celebrated with fervours, but which comes up against the traditions and modesty of a society which, beneath its exuberant exterior, jealously guards its values.
