Raised in the United States, Efi had never even heard about Laos growing up. The Vietnam War loomed large in textbooks, but the vital role of Laos itself\u2014its lands scarred by conflict\u2014was never mentioned. It wasn\u2019t until a serendipitous meeting with a French-Laotian doctor in Paris that Efi got his first taste of Lao culture. Efi\u2019s initial assignment was as a consultant for a Pilot textile centre with a United Nations development project\u2014a rare position, one that would allow him, legally, to live and work in this enigmatic nation.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]It was through the U.N. project\u2019s G.M. that Efi\u2019s adventure truly took form. He introduced him to the U.N. project, growing local cotton and hand weaving it into pristine, understated fabrics. \u201cLao cotton had everything\u2014beautiful fabrics, skilled workers, a factory built with U.N. money. What he needed was someone who could do something new with these materials,\u201d Efi says. That\u2019s where his vision and Paris-educated sense of fashion came in. \u201cNobody was making sexy, contemporary clothing out these cottons.<\/p>\n

Efi began training artisans and developing new clothing and home furnishings. Now intimately connected to the people, the process, and the textiles, he launched his own business with the goal of bringing Lao designs to France. He partnered with a saleswoman in Avignon, and soon his garments\u2014crafted with both cotton and luxurious silk and hemp\u2014were appearing in boutiques. There were hurdles (\u201csales went well, but she didn\u2019t pay me!\u201d), but Efi\u2019s passion made him resilient.<\/p>\n

He soon realized his creative ambitions would be better served by looking east instead of west. \u201cI made the move to Bangkok\u2014not because I planned it, but because I had to survive.\u201d Thailand\u2019s capital was faster and more open to fresh ideas. Though his first attempts to break into Central Department Store were rebuffed, the innovative spirit of the Mall Group welcomed him. At his peak, Efi\u2019s creations were featured in eight Central Department Stores, with offices, staff, and production humming in Bangkok, and a flagship shop at Silom Complex.<\/p>\n
