While not quite on par with Waikiki, the island’s west coast offers a unique charm and exhilarating waves.

The surfing season in Phuket runs from April to November. Don’t expect towering waves or barreling tubes (the maximum height averages around 3 meters), but the island boasts a variety of spots that will satisfy both beginners and seasoned surfers looking for a thrilling off-season escape.

Here are some of the best spots to catch a wave:

Kata Beach: Home to Phuket’s largest annual surf competition, Kata Beach is considered the surfing capital of the island. Known for its consistent waves, this spot is ideal for all levels, offering fast yet manageable rides that sometimes break on the sandbar. Board rentals and surf lessons are readily available. Winds blow from southwest to northeast, with swells reaching up to two meters. Be mindful of the shore break at the southern end of the beach.

Bang Tao Beach: The central part of the beach is sheltered from strong swells, providing gentle waves perfect for beginners. Further north, the waves become larger and more challenging as they’re exposed to the wind. Shifting sandbars create unpredictable conditions, but sometimes deliver near-perfect rides. Expect southerly winds and waves reaching up to three meters.

Kalim Beach: Shielded from powerful swells, Kalim Beach is a popular choice for surfers of all levels. The ride is approximately 50-100 meters long, becoming shallow towards the end. Winds blow from southeast to northeast, with swells reaching up to three meters. Be cautious of the shallow coral reef break.

Kamala Beach (north end): This spot is reserved for experienced surfers. Reefs create stable sandbars and consistent three-meter waves that break close to shore. Expect variable winds and swells up to three meters.

Laem Singh Beach: Offers fast-paced surfing suitable for all levels. Sheltered from the wind, the spot provides waves on most tides. Expect swells reaching up to three meters.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] You are here :
Home[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Phuket is steadily gaining a reputation as a surfer’s paradise.
