Bay Regatta celebrates 25th anniversary on the water

Photography By Simon James

TYBA

While COVID-19 restrictions affected the entry list and route selections this year, Regattas Asia continued to sail on with the 25th Anniversary of the Bay Regatta.

A late change of opening venues took the competitors to the Royal Phuket Marina, who provided complimentary berthing for competitors and the opportunity for boats to test out the newly dredged channel offering all-tide access for boats with a draft up to 2.4m.

Following Covid-19 regulations, registration proceeded without a hitch as a pleasant evening (without speeches) opened the event at the Isola restaurant.

TYBA
Although the event traditionally passes through the northern area of Phang Nga Bay, current restrictions limit the use of race marks or groups of yachts joining together in the national parks. With an alternative route found, boats departed early for the first day’s racing from a new start-line off Koh Rang Yai and followed the revised “Really Good Deli” Race Day course around the southern tip of Koh Yao Yai before heading north to Koh Yao Noi.

TYBAWith the regatta offering the first tourism income (since the last Bay Regatta), restaurants and resorts re-opened, and longtails converted to water taxis. The island greeted sailors with a traditional Thai welcome and songtao transportation to resorts with a smile, behind a face mask.

A very social evening was held at Baan Chang restaurant; the regatta must give many thanks to the local community for supporting the event.

TYBADay 2: With competitors arriving at the start area, racing got off to an early start for the Octopus Electrical Services Race Day. Taking the fleet 25 miles through the Koh Hong Group to Ao Nang, Krabi, where most competitors moved into the Vacation Village – Phra Nang Inn for their 2-night say.

The Vacation Village group has family-run resorts in Krabi and Koh Lanta and has been a longtime supporter of The Bay Regatta. They have committed to supporting yachting in the area and have already agreed to support the 2023 event.

TYBADay 3: The Vacation Village Island Race, saw very light winds, which slowly filled in from the west before disappearing by lunchtime. Racing was restricted to a two-leg race before racing was abandoned for the day. Everyone returned to the shore for the Vacation Village social prize-giving event with great food supplemented by the Really Good Deli.

Day 4: After a short delay, racing started in light winds on a straight-line course for The CocaCola Haad Thip Race, cutting out the Krabi islands and heading directly for the gate off of Koh Yao Yai. All classes were shortened at the gate after a long five hours in the Sun. Yachts them headed back to Ao Chalong for the final presentations at the Kan Eang II restaurant.

The results

Nils Dengenkole’s Phoenix dominated the Monohull Classes with the double with four wins in the Monohull Racing Class and three wins in the Monohull Performance Class.
Phoenix was again first in the Monohull Racing Class with 2017 champions Megazip, helmed by Aleksandr Trofimenko in second, followed by Andrew McDermott’s Jessandra II in third place.
In the Monohull Performance Class, Phoenix was similarly followed by Megazip in second, with Hans Rahmann’s Yasooda celebrating their return after 14 years, with third place.

It was all down to the last race in the Multihull Class with Dan Fidock’s Stealth design Saffron coming out on top for the double win.
In the Multihull Racing Class, the Asia Catamarans built Stealth designs dominated the positions, winning all top 3 places. Dan Fidock’s Saffron led the way, followed by Glywn Rowlands’ Twister 2 in Second and John Spencer’s Zero in third place.
In the Multihull Performance Class, Dan Fidock’s Saffron again came in first, followed by Rick Fieldings Mojo in second with Warwick Downes’ Bonza 69 Slam coming in with third place on a tie break with Twister 2.

This year, the on-water team was a little leaner due to Covid restrictions with Chandran and Captain Nee managing marks and gates on “Rainman” with Eddie and the boat crew assisting Simon on the Really Good Deli’s sponsored “Azure 3”. Thanks must go to Peter Dyers’ Sunshine Yachts and Bob Mott for providing the boats at special rates to the regatta.
Let’s not forget Kae Wattana’s Regattas Asia shore team, led by Khun Boss. It takes many people to organize an event that spans three provinces in three days—especially dealing with daily changing government rules and restrictions. Many volunteers have travelled from Bangkok, Songkla and Ko Samui to support this year’s event.

Licence to Clean launched to keep Phuket beaches clear of trash

WHAT – January 23rd was an historical day for Phuket. Oceans For All Foundation, a Thai non-profit organisation operates an eco-friendly catamaran to rid Phuket’s shores of plastic. The boat, named “Licence to clean 001”, was launched January 23rd in Kamala, at the InterContinental Phuket Resort, a stunning five-star beach resort in presence of Phuket’s Governor.

The boat was designed by the Phuket based think-tank of Wawa Creations, a team of eco-creators with designer Claude Petit, G&T Yard owner Toi Sanghin and CE inspector and Disabled Sailing Thailand founder Peter Jacops, all aiming at developing eco-friendly and safe maritime products.

WHY – Over the past few decades, millions of tons of plastic have entered the oceans, damaging ecosystems and disrupting food chains. These types of human interferences present the biggest threat to the oceans.

HOW IT WORKS – Oceans for All foundation’s coastal cleaner Catamaran, 5.8m long, fully built-in High-Density Poly Ethylene (HDPE) plastic, is the first of its kind and the beginning of a series of 7 catamarans to be operated around Phuket beaches and marinas to collect floating trash while cruising, thanks to a specifically designed skimming basket between the hulls.

HDPE is the plastic that milk bottles are made from. It is 100% recyclable and very strong. HDPE is classified as a class 2 recycling material.

The collected plastic will be sent to the WongPanit recycling Center, our local partner, based in Phuket, to make this project as sustainable as possible.

“The Licence to clean 001″s mission is very important for the environment and public awareness,” said David Martin, President of Oceans for All foundation. He insists that !Although this ocean cleanup will have a profound effect on the marine ecosystem, it is just part of the solution. We also need to radically change our way of life and consumption habits to move away from single use plastic. InterContinental Phuket Resort and Headstart international School are our first and main partners. I hope they will bring inspiration to other businesses and organisations to support OFA and raise awareness to protect the environment.”

ABOUT OCEANS FOR ALL FOUNDATION – Oceans For All Foundation is working to protect the oceans from today”s global challenges. Together with your help, we strive to create solutions for a healthier ocean and the lives that depend on it. For more information, visit Oceans For All Foundation, or follow us on Facebook

CSG leads the way with environmentally- friendly marine building materials

Composite Solutions Group (CSG) is a consulting and business development firm run by founder & CEO Mr. Satja Chayangkanon.

CSG’s composite sandwich constructions are light, strong and sustainable. While many local builders in Asia are still using Inexpensive local PU, EPS or PS foams, just spending a bit more for closed cells PET or PVC will provide you a long-term cost savings in resin absorption, lamination and labor time. Using non-structural foam will always cost you more in the long run.

CSG is a one-stop network for business support & development. It has partners in the marine, aerospace, transportation, renewable energy, architecture and sporting equipment fields. It can provide all of the following:

  • COSTING & PROJECT SUPPORT
  • MANUFACTURING FACILITIES
  • DESIGN & ENGINEERING SUPPORT
  • PRODUCTS & EQUIPMENT
  • RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

Composite Solutions Group Represent Armacell 100% PET foams range from 10mm to 300mm (also depending on densities). The company also carries limited Armacell PET foil for special applications, ranging from 1.5-3mm thick. One sheet of 15-20mm foam is around 120+ plastic bottles that are not floating in our oceans, lakes, rivers, streets and landfills.

Since its introduction to South East Asia, Armacell PET foil is being used in multiple applications, including water sports, aerospace  & the transportation industries.

CSG customizes panels for exterior and interior construction. With foam backing, builders and end-users do not need to worry about the composite wood panels warping or bending like traditional materials in the humid Asian environment. This means no more wood boring insects and Armacell panels/foam have special thermo, fire and acoustic properties.

The panels are stronger, and 35-40% lighter than traditional material like plywood and they will not rot.

CSG panels are made of 100% recycled PET foam (Armacell), along with bio resin from Bio Entropy and natural fibers if requested.

There is no MOQ for local orders/stock that’s available!

We can all do more to reduce our carbon footprint. Please contact Satja at [email protected]www.compositesg.com to find out he and his company can help you do that. But remember to follow the naval architect’s designs to the tee to obtain the optimal performance from these eco-friendly materials.

Some happy CSG customers

In Thailand, Khun Satja cites Sorakrit “Billy” Krittiemmek of Honda

Marine and designer Somyos Hamali, who are doing their best to use eco-friendly materials wherever possible for the local market and looking into expanding into other parts of Southeast Asia (http://www.npskmarine.co.th/).

One of CSG’s strategic partners is TRIAC Composites, who is always thinking outside the box. The company’s DNA originates in the marine industry; but soon after moving to Vietnam the company diversified into the transport, architecture, and the oil & gas industries (https://www.triaccomposites.com/post/danish-newspaper-reports-on-triac-ferries).

Mr. Tho and his team at Haiphong-based at Century not only take care of their customers, but also supply the Vietnamese Navy with fast patrols boats. Century was one of the first companies in North Vietnam to apply the vacuum infusion process and is now using Armacell eco-friendly core materials •  www.thtcentury.com/about.html

Floeth Yachts made a boat from Armacell (100% recycled PET high density foam). And Floeth’s 55′ speed cats are constructed with both high-density PVC and PET. These boats are being operated in Phuket. These boats will NOT break or burn like many local builds. They are being operated in heavy conditions. While most boats are docked, these speed cats are out jumping the big surf (https://floethyachts.com/)

New partners in Asia that have taken advantage of the Armacell PET, include Scott Bradley at East Marine Asia, Transmarine Fiberglass, Silver Star, Seaman Marine and Nice Composites.

5-Star Private Jet Terminal in Phuket to Open

A boon for visiting superyacht owners, their guests and high-end tourists

A Five-Star fully integrated “Private Jet Terminal” in Phuket, attracting high end Superyacht visitors and tourists worldwide, was announced at a Grand Opening ceremony December 16th by Siam Land Flying.

The facility, to be fully operational in the early part of 2022, aims to drive Thai tourism and attract more Superyachts to the worldwide dream destination and ‘Asia Pacific Superyacht Hub’ of Phuket, Thailand.

“The opening of the Private Jet Terminal of Siam Land Flying Phuket is another major milestone for the company’s business operation as it sees the continuous growing trend of private jet business, particularly during the pandemic situation. The Private Jet business has gained more popularity as it offers privacy among VIP tourists who emphasize convenience and service standards as their top priorities”, said Mr. Kachorn Chiaravanont, Executive Vice Chairman of Siam Land Flying Co., Ltd.

A long-time Luxury Private Jet Charter service and world-class air ambulance services provider across SE Asia under the service brand of Executive Wings and Medical wings, the new Private Jet Terminal was announced at the Grand Opening.

The event officially inaugurating the special announcement occasion was co-chaired by Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Public Health, Mr. Narong Woonciew, Phuket Governor Mr. Prapas Kong-ied, Director General Treasury Department, Mr. Nitinai Sirismatthakarn, President of the Airport Authority of Thailand Public Company Ltd. and Mr. Soopakij Chearavanont, Chairman of Charoen Pokphand Group along with various representatives from the public sector and leading national and local business operators.

Private Jets have become an alternative in the new normal tourism, minimizing contact from the airport’s congestion and during flights. The opening of this private terminal is another factor that will increase confidence among tourists who travel by private jets, including superyacht owners. The end-to-end services at the terminal meet the international standards for safety and security but at the same time are faster and more convenient, impressing tourists as they arrive in Phuket, a major superyacht hub in Asia with four well equipped marinas and a dream destination for tourists worldwide.

Siam Land Flying, which as a subsidiary of Charoen Pokphand Group, is extremely proud to support the Thai tourism industry, stating the facility will draw more tourists with high purchasing power and will generate revenue and spending in the country, as well as creating new jobs for local people.

Mr. Greg Martin, Chief Executive Officer of Siam Land Flying Co., Ltd. said at the opening, “The Private Jet Terminal of Siam Land Flying Phuket is fully equipped to provide a premium service for our VIP guests in a discrete and safe manner.”

“The Private Jet Terminal building is situated on a 17-rai area of land in Mai Kao Sub-District, Talang District, Phuket Province. Our 1,200-square-meter Private Jet Terminal features several VIP lounges and all of the services required for smooth travel both internationally and domestically with Immigration, Customs and Disease Control services available on-site.”

“Our comprehensive services and our world class facilities cement Siam Land Flying’s determination to enhance the very first experience amongst our guests once they reach Thailand. We have made significant investments in fully electric ground support equipment including aircraft tow tugs, ground power units and support vehicles at the Siam Land Private Jet Terminal.  This helps achieve our sustainability goals as most other facilities around the world use diesel powered equipment”, added Mr. Martin.

The terminal is complemented by approximately 7,000 square meters of hangar space and 12,000 square meters of Apron space to provide safe parking for large-sized private jets. For example, up to 7 Gulfstream G650’s can be accommodated, as well as accommodating ultra large-sized private jets, such as the Boeing Business Jet or Airbus Corporate Jet.

Maintenance support can be provided by the licensed aircraft engineers which are part of the Siam Land Flying team. In addition, other services are provided such as shuttle service, hotel reservation & co-ordination, tourism & recreation consultancy, in-flight food & beverage service, and VIP lounges for departing and arriving passengers as well as crews.

Royal Phuket Marina Commits to Sustainable Operations

A pioneer in sustainability in Phuket, 5 Gold Anchor award-winning Royal Phuket Marina was the first marina in Thailand to switch to renewable energy, using the latest solar technology.

The marina’s solar panel system utilizes the roof space atop its fully covered 4-storey boat dry stack system, and with the initial deployment, 60 percent of the power consumed in the marina’s operations was generated by the solar panels.

Moving closer to marina Chairman Gulu Lalvani’s vision of fully sustainable operations, additional panels have been recently installed, nearly quadrupling current capacity from 34kWp to over 130kWp. This latest expansion of the solar panel system shows the marina’s firm commitment to sustainable practices and minimizing the environmental impact of its operations.

In July 2019, the marina was the first in Thailand to be awarded ‘Clean Marina Accreditation, meeting the strict requirements of the ‘Clean Marina Program’ of the Association of Marina Industries. To achieve this certification, a facility must meet all legal regulatory requirements and a percentage of voluntary best management practices.

Recently, Royal Phuket Marina signed up for the Plastic-Free Marina Pledge by the Marina Industries Association (MIA) and it is the first marina in Thailand to join this important initiative. Signed by over 60 marinas around the world, the signees affirm their commitment to reduce and eventually eliminate the use of single-use plastics in the marina by 2025.

Royal Phuket Marina has already made several initiatives towards achieving this goal. The marina has eliminated the use of plastic bottles throughout its facilities and offers free recycling stations throughout the marina and property for their customers. “We fully understand our responsibility as custodians to protect our marine environment,” said RPM’s General Manager, Yves Van Kerrebroeck. “To achieve our goals, we have established an internal team tasked with identifying and implementing best-practices throughout our facilities. In addition to our plastic-free marina pledge, we will soon be announcing several exciting new initiatives we will be rolling out in the coming months.”

As a pioneer in sustainability in Thailand’s marine industry, Royal Phuket Marina was also the first to switch to renewable energy with the installation of solar panels to power its marina operations – an initiative recently expanded, quadrupling its previous capacity.

(To view the list of marinas and associated businesses that have pledged to eliminate single-use plastics, please visit: www.marinas.net.au

Royal Phuket Marina is further enhancing its green credentials and commitment to sustainable operations with the recent arrival of its newest wet berth resident, a V5 Seabin, an additional step the marina is taking towards ensuring a clean and green marine environment.

Developed by The Seabin Project, the innovative V5 Seabin functions as a floating rubbish bin, and is designed to be installed in marinas, yacht clubs, ports, and other bodies of water to assist with rubbish and debris buildup. Made from recyclable materials, the unit features a submersible water pump which draws in water from the surface and captures rubbish via a catch bag which can hold up to 20kg of debris. The water is then circulated back into the marina debris-free.

The catch bag filters macro and microplastics down to 2mm, as well as microfibers, organic waste, and fuel and oil. The V5 Seabin is strategically placed at Royal Phuket Marina, and all refuse is collected and sorted in on-site recycling bins 4 times daily and collects a total of around 48kg each day.

Octo Marine has been leading the way in fresh water treatment for the yachting industry since 2000, and it’s been very encouraging to see the effort in the move away from the use of plastic bottles onboard the yachts.

Our “THINK OUTSIDE THE BOTTLE” campaign is dedicated to supporting the yachts in the reduction of their plastic waste by putting in place a Fresh Water Safety Plan, so that the fresh water system is maintained and monitored for quality control. Hence our motto, “SHOWER, USE, AND DRINK IN CONFIDENCE, COMPLIANCE AND COMFORT”.
We propose suitable equipment for both sterilization and filtration of the water with chiller and sparkling systems. We also carry out regular onboard water analysis, guidance and solutions for peace of mind concerning your yacht’s water system.

Our provisioning teams are now utilizing recycled packaging and where ever possible not buying fruits and vegetables in plastic supermarket packaging but from local organic farms that have natural packaging (banana leaves) if they have any packaging at all. This also is giving and supporting our local producers rather than the supermarket giants.

One thing many don’t realize in Thailand and most of SE Asia, is when we collect the garbage from a yacht, it does not just go to a landfill, it’s is then sorted in simple recycling centers. We are advocates of ensuring E.G 5 cubes of garbage go to these centres so that they are not burnt or put in a landfill.

For our delicate coral seas and sun cream we like to promote and sell to all our yachts when entering our waters the use of non coral damaging environmental sun creams/screens • [email protected]

Marine and designer Somyos Hamali, who are doing their best to use eco-friendly materials wherever possible for the local market and looking into expanding into other parts of Southeast Asia (www.npskmarine.co.th).

One of CSG’s strategic partners is TRIAC Composites, who is always thinking outside the box. The company’s DNA originates in the marine industry; but soon after moving to Vietnam the company diversified into the transport, architecture, and the oil & gas industries (www.triaccomposites.com/post/danish-newspaper-reports-on-triac-ferries).
